Personnel that was responsible for advance planning interviewed by the committee denied being responsible for any of the security failures and deflected blame, according to the report. Agents on the sniper team that talked to the committee said they saw police approaching the building he would end up shooting at Trump from, one of which saw a gun drawn by an officer, but did not raise any alarms over their communication system.
Asked if the situation spurred a thought of having Trump being pulled off the stage or prevent him from going on stage, the leader said “the thought did not cross my mind.” Secret Service agents said they thought local law enforcement was covering the building, while Butler officials said they had told Secret Service they did not have the ability to. According to the report, Secret Service was told two days in advance that local law enforcement did not have the manpower to lock down the building.
“There were several different plans in place, different pieces of the puzzle from the advance that all had their own stake in making sure that that building was not accessible,” the agent said.Requests for additional equipment and liaisons were denied, which agents attributed to resources being stretched thin in a presidential election year.
