The Senate Judiciary Committee is investigating the New Orleans terrorist attack and the Las Vegas explosion that occurred on the same day, seeking information about potential connections and security lapses that may have contributed to these events.
The Senate Judiciary Committee launched an investigation on Thursday into the New Orleans terrorist attack that tragically claimed 15 lives on New Year's Day, as well as the explosion outside the Trump hotel in Las Vegas which resulted in the perpetrator's death on the same day.
Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley, a Republican from Iowa, and Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations Chairman Ron Johnson, a Republican from Wisconsin, sent letters to the Justice Department, Department of Homeland Security, Department of Defense, and the FBI seeking more comprehensive information regarding the backgrounds and motives of both attackers. They are particularly interested in uncovering details about Shamsud-Din Jabbar, the New Orleans attacker, including his social media activity leading up to the planned assault. Jabbar, a Texas native fueled by ISIS extremism, posted five videos on his Facebook page hours before driving a truck through New Orleans revelers on Bourbon Street. The committee members emphasized the public's right to complete transparency and the truth regarding these horrific incidents. While acknowledging that both investigations are ongoing, they expect the relevant agencies to cooperate fully with congressional oversight requests on this critical matter.Adding to the gravity of the situation, whistleblower claims to the senators' offices have been confirmed by the FBI. These claims reveal that the FBI Special Agent in Charge (SAC) of the New Orleans field office was on vacation during the New Year's attack and did not return until January 2nd. The committee chairmen expressed concern over this lapse in leadership, stating that a SAC should be present during major public events and that the FBI's failure to disclose this information during briefings to Congress is unacceptable. They demanded further details from the FBI regarding this matter. The investigation also extends to Matthew Alan Livelsberger, responsible for the Las Vegas explosion. Livelsberger, an Army master sergeant from Colorado Springs, died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound prior to detonating a rented Tesla Cybertruck outside the Trump tower. While the FBI maintains that there is no connection between the two incidents, the committee chairmen point out that both perpetrators served in the military, overlapping at Fort Bragg and in Afghanistan. Additionally, both rented vehicles from the same company, Turo. The committee seeks to determine if there were any links between these seemingly isolated events. The FBI continues to investigate the Bourbon Street attack. Jabbar had visited New Orleans twice before the January 1st attack - once on October 30, 2024, and again on November 10, 2024. The terrorist also visited Cairo, Egypt, and Toronto, Canada, prior to the attack, according to the FBI. Although Jabbar seemingly acted alone, authorities are still investigating the possibility of accomplices
