Senate Passes NDAA Banning Transgender Treatments for Military Kids
TRANSGENDER RIGHTS, NDAA, MILITARY

The Senate narrowly passed the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) despite controversy surrounding a last-minute amendment banning federal funding for transgender healthcare for children of U.S. military personnel. This decision reflects the ongoing national debate about transgender rights, particularly concerning youth.

Conservatives notched another win on Wednesday in their fight against giving kids access to transgender medical treatments. The Senate passed the National Defense Authorization Act 85-14, sending it to President Biden’s desk. The bill succeeded despite backlash from Democrats over Speaker Mike Johnson’s last-minute amendment forbidding the use of federal dollars to cover transgender treatments for children of U.S. military members.

'The NDAA isn’t perfect but it still includes some very good things that Democrats fought for,' said Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y. This comes as the nation continues to grapple with how to address the transgender issue when it comes to kids. Earlier this week, Disney announced they’re pulling a transgender storyline from a Pixar series 'Win or Lose' debuting in February. A Disney spokesperson said, “We recognize that many parents would prefer to discuss certain subjects with their children on their own terms and timeline.” Transgender athletes remain a contentious issue at the college level. On Tuesday GOP Senators John Kennedy, R-La., and Josh Hawley, R-Mo., confronted NCAA President Charlie Baker.'Because we believe that’s consistent with federal policy... clarity on in this issue at the federal level would be very helpful,' responded Baker. Hawley pushed back cutting off Baker saying, 'Oh that’s such a cop out in other words somebody else please do it for us.' At least 23 states have state-level laws restricting transgender athletes' ability to participate in school sports. In April the GOP-led House passed a federal bill declaring allowing men to play women’s sports violates Title 9. The Democrat-controlled Senate didn’t take up the bill this term
