A new amendment to the national defense bill would prevent China, Russia, North Korea and Iran from purchasing U.S. farmland.
The Senate voted 91-7 Tuesday night to prevent China, Russia, North Korea and Iran from purchasing U.S. farmland—part of a bipartisan push to scrutinize adversaries’ business dealings in the United States, after incidents like the Chinese spy balloon saga and recent land purchases by China near U.S. military bases.Korea or Iran from purchasing U.S. farmland is pictured on July 11.
The measure would also give the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States, commonly known as CFIUS, the power to evaluate land deals, using data from the Department of Agriculture, and block those deals if it sees fit . The amendment was co-sponsored by a bipartisan group of eight Republicans and two Democrats, with the “no” votes coming from five Democrats and two Republicans.
The Senators also voted 91-6 to approve an amendment that would monitor investment from U.S. companies in China, Russia, North Korea and Iran in high-tech sectors, such artificial intelligence, semiconductors, satellite communication and quantum computing.Whether the amendment passes the House.
