Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer announced Saturday that Democrats will block legislation that would fund the government if it finances the Department of Homeland Security and its agencies. Senate Democrats will block legislation that would fund much of the government if it contains dollars for ICE and other Homeland Security agencies, Minority Leader Chuck Schumer announced Saturday.
that a Homeland Security bill will need to be separated from the package of six following the killing of another Minneapolis resident by immigration agents. “Senate Democrats will not provide the votes to proceed to the appropriations bill if the DHS funding bill is included," Schumer wrote on X. The Homeland Security bill, which the House passed last week, would fund ICE, Customs and Border Protection and Citizenship and Immigration Services, along with other bodies like the Coast Guard, Secret Service and the Federal Emergency Management Agency. The Senate was going to consider it with five other bills that would fund several departments, including Defense, State, Treasury and others. Schumer said he would vote against the package since the Homeland Security bill is “woefully inadequate” to address issues with ICE.“Democrats sought common sense reforms in the Department of Homeland Security spending bill, but because of Republicans’ refusal to stand up to President Trump, the DHS bill is woefully inadequate to rein in the abuses of ICE. Greg Bovino, head of CBP’s Minneapolis team, said that Pretti was violently resisting agents’ attempts to disarm him of a gun he had. A Border Patrol officer then fired multiple shots out of fear for his life and the lives of other agents, Bovino noted. Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem has shared a similar account of the killing. Pretti’s death has caused more Democrats to oppose Homeland Security funding and consider impeaching Noem, an effort that gained steam after ICE’s killing of Minneapolis resident Renee Good earlier this month. The exact details of her death are unclear, but she was driving away from a confrontation with agents when one shot and killed her. House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries said Saturday that Homeland Security and President Donald Trump are “completely and totally out of control.” “Taxpayer dollars are being misused by DHS to brutalize American citizens and law-abiding immigrants with impunity,” Jeffries said in aTrump has largely defended immigration agents' actions, although he reportedly said Sunday that his administration was reviewing Pretti’s killing.Florida AG demands nurse's license revoked after 'vile' TikTok, supporters say free speech Florida’s attorney general wants a nurse’s license revoked over a TikTok about Karoline Leavitt, while supporters argue the backlash is politically motivated. In a thrilling NFC Championship victory tonight, the Seattle Seahawks defeated the Los Angeles Rams to earn a berth in Super Bowl 60.As confetti started to settle into the turf at Lumen Field, music still blared with Seahawks players enjoying their Super Bowl clinching moment with friends andA man was shot by deputies after a violent altercation in Parkland Sunday morning.
