The Senate cleared the way for Democrats to raise the U.S. debt ceiling without Republican support
Democrats, who control both chambers of Congress, are expected to increase the borrowing limit by about $2 trillion. It would likely carry the country through November's midterm elections.
A chunk of Republicans voted with Democrats to allow the Senate to increase the ceiling with a simple majority, rather than the 60 votes usually needed to break a filibuster.
