Measure to implement private school vouchers in Texas died over the weekend, then rose from the dead Monday.
that Abbott and Cruz have clashed over school choice, as the senator last year supported several candidates in downballot races opposite Abbott’s preferred candidates. Cruz said then that he was backing the candidates who favored stronger school choice measures.
A spokeswoman for Cruz said the tweet"does not refer to any particular bill at this point, just the overall effort." The senator sent letters to each Republican member of the Texas House earlier this year calling on them to support making every child in Texas eligible for state-funded education savings accounts they could use to attend private schools.
The proposal would allow parents to pull their kids out of public schools and place them in private schools, receiving $8,000 or more for doing so. Efforts to pass similar legislation have been fruitless for decades in Texas, blocked by a coalition of rural Republicans and Democrats in the House who view such policies as an existential threat to the traditional system of public education.
Throughout this year’s legislative session, the policy has been a top priority of Abbott, who has lobbied House members personally and traveled the state delivering speeches in support. The bill’s fortunes have yo-yoed dramatically over the last several weeks.when the House passed its draft version of the budget, it was clear voucher policies again faced an uphill battle in that chamber.
Instead, in a dramatic showdown on the House floor, Buckley was barred from holding a committee meeting to advance the bill. He ultimately offered yet another version making far fewer children eligible for the program. This appeared to be an effort to win over support from House members, where voucher bills have never been able to win majority support.
