U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz unveiled bipartisan legislation aimed at speedier online removal of nonconsensual intimate photos and videos.
The Texas Republican’s bill also would require apps such as Snapchat and websites to remove the images within 48 hours if requested by a victim. The Federal Trade Commission would be charged with enforcing that requirement.“Imagine being 14 years old and showing up at school where your classmates believe they have seen an explicit photo of you that is a fake and a fraud. The photos may not be real, but the pain and the humiliation is,” Cruz said.
U.S. Sen. Cynthia Lummis, R-Wyo., objected to that legislation as overly broad. She joined Cruz at his Tuesday news conference to support his proposal. “These images are child pornography,” she said. “These girls were 14 years old. Their innocence was taken that day.” Parker County District Attorney Jeff Swain said by email the person who created the Aledo High images was “sanctioned” within the juvenile system, but his name, the charge and the punishment could not be released because juvenile proceedings are confidential.
