ANCHORAGE, Alaska —According to the Department of the Interior, approximately 1,900 Alaska Native Vietnam-era veterans are eligible to select a 160-acre land entitlement under the Alaska Native Vietnam-era Veteran Land Allotment Program .
The Dingell Act established ANVLAP as the primary method for transferring lands to Alaska Native veterans who served on active duty during Vietnam from Aug. 5, 1964, to Dec. 31, 1971, and who were unable to apply for allotments because of their military service during the Vietnam War era. On Monday, Sen. Sullivan said he and Sen. Murkowski are still working on legislation extending the program for five years and expanding the available lands, particularly in the Southeast, to assist Vietnam veterans in obtaining land near their homes.On Tuesday, Sen. Sullivan, said the proposed bill made it out of the Energy and Natural Resources Committee with the five-year extension, but the land provision was stripped out.
