Sen. Sandra Williams, a Cleveland Democrat who is barred from running for re-election due to term limits, is among those who have applied to be appointed to a vacant Ohio House seat representing Cleveland and Garfield Heights.

State Sen. Sandra Williams, a Cleveland Democrat, speaks on the Ohio Senate floor in May of 2019. Williams and four others have applied to be appointed to a vacant Ohio House seat that represents Cleveland and Garfield Heights. COLUMBUS, Ohio --

Also applying for the Ohio House 11th District seat, formerly represented by Williams and most recently held by Cleveland City Councilwoman Stephanie Howse, are:Shayla Davis, a former Garfield Heights City Council member who lost the election to be the city’s mayor in NovemberChad Stephens, a grassroots organizing coordinator. The 11th House District represents part of Cleveland’s East Side, including the Hough, Central and Fairfax neighborhoods, as well as Garfield Heights.

Ohio House Democratic leadership will chose Howse’s replacement. A screening process is ongoing and the deadline to apply for the seat was last Friday. Maya Majikas, a spokeswoman for Ohio House Minority Leader Allison Russo, said interviews will be scheduled with the candidates in the coming days. Whoever is appointed to the seat would hold it for the rest of the year, but immediately would have to run for election in the May primary if they plan to stay in office, although district lines are in flux after theWilliams previously held the 11th Ohio House seat before she left due to term limits, running for the Ohio Senate in 2015 and paving the way for Howse to win the election to replace her. Williams unsuccessfully ran for Cleveland mayor last year.
