Menendez and his wife were indicted for their allegedly “corrupt relationship” with the businessmen, in which they allegedly accepted bribes—including in the form of gold bars and a Mercedes-Benz convertible—in exchange for Menendez using his power as a senator to benefit the businessmen and the Egyptian government.
Menendez’s not guilty plea was widely expected as the senator has vigorously opposed the charges against him,in a press conference Monday he “firmly believe[s] that when all the facts are presented, not only will I be exonerated, but I still will be New Jersey’s senior senator.”What To Watch For
