U.S. Sen. Bob Menendez is returning to Manhattan federal court to enter a not guilty plea to a conspiracy charge alleging that he acted as an agent of the Egyptian government even as he chaired the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.

The newest charge requiring Menendez to come to court, Monday, Oct. 23, 2023, returned last week in a rewritten indictment, accuses the Democrat of conspiring to violate the Foreign Agents Registration Act, which requires people to register with the U.S. government if they act as"an agent of a foreign principal.

Prosecutors said the senator and his wife, Nadine Menendez, accepted bribes of cash, gold bars and a luxury car over the past five years from three New Jersey businessmen in exchange for a variety of corrupt acts. Last week, Nadine Menendez and a businessman, Wael Hana, pleaded not guilty to the superseding indictment.
