President Joe Biden’s pending nomination of Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti to serve as U.S. ambassador to India could be in peril, with Sen. Mark Kelly joining other Democratic senators expressing concerns and Sen. Kyrsten Sinema remaining non-committal.
The mayor, who is term-limited, has long said he was unaware of the allegations. A city investigation did not find evidence of misconduct by the aide or that the mayor witnessed inappropriate behavior, according to the Los Angeles Times. Those findings are at odds with the recollections of former staffers who have testified Garcetti was aware of Jacob’s conduct.
Garcetti needs the approval of at least 50 senators in the evenly split, 100-member chamber to secure confirmation as ambassador.
