That's the easy part, as Republicans and Democrats wrangle for control of the state House.
Sen. Kim Ward, R-Westmoreland County, has become the first woman elected Senate President Pro Tempore in Pennsylvania history. Mark Pynes | [email protected]. Kim Ward, R-Westmoreland County, was elected President Pro Tempore of the Pennsylvania Senate Tuesday, in a proceeding that - while history-making - also went entirely according to script.
In remarks during the Senate’s opening session Tuesday, Ward saluted the record number of women serving with her in the Senate - now 16 total, with eight from each major party - and she paid a special tribute to one particular woman who set her on her path: her mother, Joanna Renko. “We are not all the same party or ideology, but we are all here for one basic reason - to make change for the betterment of the people we represent,” Ward said. “And we are blessed to have been given the opportunity to do that. To leave things better than when we got here.”
In 2001, Ward decided to run for public office in her own right, after becoming outraged over her township’s plan to spend $5 million on a recreation center. Ward won that election to the Hempfield Township board of supervisors, andthat during her five years on the board, the township got its rec center but at a tenth of the original cost.
