Senator Joni Ernst unveils a new bill aimed at reducing overpayments in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) and holding states accountable for program errors.
Senator Joni Ernst , a Republican from Iowa and the chair of the Senate Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) caucus, is spearheading an initiative to curtail what she perceives as substantial waste within food stamp programs. Senator Ernst will introduce a new bill on Wednesday aimed at addressing overpayments in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program ( SNAP ), commonly known as ' food stamps .
' Senator Ernst asserts that 'bureaucratic blunders are leaving billions of dollars on the table as Americans struggle to keep pace with the ever-growing $36 trillion debt.' She emphasizes the importance of SNAP in providing sustenance to families, stating, 'That’s why we need to strengthen its integrity by holding states accountable for growing error rates, implementing a zero-tolerance policy, and swiftly recovering overpayments.' The proposed legislation, titled the 'Snap Back Inaccurate SNAP Payments Act,' would obligate states to recoup SNAP overpayments from recipients and mandate the return of owed funds to the federal government. Furthermore, the measure would hold states responsible for their SNAP payment distribution error rates, thereby incentivizing sound financial management. A key provision of Ernst's bill would require the reporting of all errors, rather than just those exceeding a $54 tolerance threshold. Senator Ernst projects that her bill could trim spending by approximately $91 billion over the next decade, according to her office. DOGE was initially announced by former President Donald Trump, who appointed billionaire Elon Musk and former presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy to lead a new advisory board focused on reducing government waste. However, Ramaswamy recently announced he is stepping down from DOGE to pursue a gubernatorial bid in Ohio. Following Trump's DOGE initiative, Republicans in both the House and Senate established caucuses bearing the same name to advance his agenda of cutting waste, bureaucracy, and spending. Senator Ernst has already introduced several bills aligned with DOGE's objectives
