Even as he is being censured and criticized by some Texas GOP officials, U.S. Sen. John Cornyn said on Friday during a stop in Austin that he’s not going to stop working with Democrats when needed to pass meaningful legislation.
Senator John Cornyn, a Republican from Texas, left, speaks during a news conference for the CHIPS and Science Act at the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C., US, on Wednesday, July 27, 2022. The Senate on Wednesday passed legislation that includes $52 billion in grants and incentives for US semiconductor manufacturing, an industry that has steadily lost ground to foreign competitors in recent years. At an event touting the recent passage of bipartisan legislation that will increase microchip manufacturing in Texas, Cornyn said he can handle the heat.“Legislating is not for sissies,” Cornyn said at Austin Community College. “The only way you can actually get things done is to talk to people across the aisle. I know there are some of my constituents who think I shouldn’t talk to anybody with a ‘D’ after their name, but if you want to get things done, you have to do that.
That comes just months after Cornyn worked with Democratic leadership to pass historic gun safety legislation after the Uvalde school shooting — a move that drew a resolution condemning him at the Texas Republican Convention in July, where he was also booed.
