When I arrived in Galveston last year, the hot and humid air was thick with renewed pride as thousands prepared for the annual festivities. The hum of music and excitement began to fill the historic downtown streets as Texans gathered to celebrate the anniversary of the end of slavery and our nation’s continued march toward equality.

Later that morning, just blocks from the Ashton Villa, I joined the dedication ceremony of the Juneteenth Legacy Project mural, “Absolute Equality.” The 5,000-square-foot art installation is a visual storytelling masterpiece depicting the early chapters of our nation’s history and the struggle for equality. The artist, Reginald Adams, shared that he hoped to capture the evolutionary narrative of absolute equality and the continued work we still have to do as a country. He succeeded.
