It's being called a major step forward for the Gateway Tunnel project. Sen. Chuck Schumer announced Thursday the project will receive $6.88 billion in federal funds.

Schumer said it is the largest federal transportation grant ever and the largest single transportation grant ever to be awarded to New York State.Governors Kathy Hochul and Phil Murphy sign $14B funding agreement for Gateway Hudson Tunnel project

The money will allow project planners to start looking for companies to build a new tunnel under the Hudson River, parallel to the aging ones currently in use. "Gateway is the most consequential infrastructure project in all of America," Schumer said."If the tunnels that cross the Hudson collapse or are unusable, our whole economy goes into turmoil."

New York's senior senator said work on the project will create 72,000 jobs and at least $19 billion in economic activity.
