Sen. Alex Padilla on mass shootings, gun legislation, the Big Lie, climate change and more [Opinion]
Sen. Alex Padilla, the first Latino to represent California in the U.S. Senate and former secretary of state of California, took time this week to meet with The San Diego Union-Tribune Editorial Board to discuss his campaign, issues facing a divided Senate and his accomplishments so far after being appointed in January 2021 by Gov. Gavin Newsom to fill the vacant Senate seat of Kamala Harris when she left the Senate to become vice president.
The conversation took place one day after the Robb Elementary School shooting in Uvalde, Texas, in which 19 children and two teachers were killed so the conversation begins with Padilla’s reflections on that tragedy, on Republican congressional inaction on gun legislation and how the nation might be able to keep its children safe.
Padilla will actually appear twice on the ballot, once to be elected to complete his current Senate term through this year and again to be elected to a new six-year term.
