They call it the “Sun City.” Overcast days are rare here. When one arrives, we long for its departure, especially at dawn and dusk. El Paso has the most beautiful sunrises and sunsets I have ever seen — a sentiment that is probably common throughout the Southwest. The irony is that as the “seeping” nears its end, the colors race across the heavens with a galloping energy — deliberate one minute, frenetic the next. The pace is stunning. What begins with faint etchings ends with brilliant streaks. We want to hold onto each minute, savor its glory, its texture. But Nature never accommodates us; she parcels out her bounty, as beautiful as it is fleeting.
Melville was not being arbitrary when he capitalized Silence. Silence is a spiritual presence, regardless of your religious preference, breathing life into every sound that shatters it. Music would be a cacophonous mess without the quiet between the notes, and cheering sections would be dull choirs if their “go, team, go” chants were endless. Sunrises and sunsets provide the quietude that launches us into day and night.
