) - As the days get colder, the risk of fires grows, and Selma city officials are sharing a reminder for residents to stay aware while taking steps to prevent them. Victor Summers was at home when his house on LL Anderson Avenue caught fire on Oct.
6. Summers says he is only alive because two men put themselves at risk to help save him. “As you say, being a godly person, that’s your job,” said Marvin Williams, one of the men who helped pull Summers out of the house. Marvin Williams says he was coming home when he noticed smoke from Summers’ house. He says he rushed over, knowing that his neighbor of many years could be inside. “We both knew the back was on fire. So, we ran to the front. We tried to break the screen door. We kick the door in. It’s basically a reaction thing,” he continued.Summers suffered serious burns but survived. The cause of the fire is still under investigation, but officials say colder weather and holiday decorations often lead to an increase in house fires. Officials are reminding families to stay alert. “We try to encourage our people when you’re using those electric heaters, space heaters not to run on those extension cords, because if you running for hours and hours, that can start a fire,” explained Councilwoman Jannie Thomas. “And we also tell them be careful when you’re cooking something.”Not reading this story on the WSFA News App?
