Selma Blair, the face of EMD Serono's new Express4MS campaign, talks about her 'long,' 'incredible,' and 'dark' multiple sclerosis journey; why 'The White Lotus' is her dream project; and life with her teenage son—which includes wearing his clothes and awkwardly addressing her old movies.
Amid a long health journey, the actress is returning to movies, making her boldest fashion statements, and becoming “friends” with her 13-year-old.for decades before she was diagnosed in August 2018; since then, she has battled the chronic autoimmune disease in the public eye. MS is undoubtedly a large piece of who Blair is, and yet, while she has dedicated herself to advocacy, she wants the world to know, MS does not define her.
“I've been really down for a lot of periods of my life and I identified with that so much that I could never identify with the cheerleader type. My comfort zone was looking on the dark side,” she says. “I'm really grateful that I was willing to be open to let that go and see the gift in my diagnosis. If I didn't get the diagnosis, I would have just not trusted myself the way I do now.”
That future is looking busy. Blair is making quite the acting comeback with three movies in the works: an Israel-Hamas war dramaNow that she is back on set, she has her eyes on one particular project. “I really am calling on the powers that be to give an old girl a break, put her on the show she really, really wants to be in:. I don't miss a moment, I re-watch it, I dance to the opening. I am a hardcore stan of everyone on that show.
