Oppenheim's frustration stems from a recent burglary experienced by his close friend, Mary Fitzgerald Bonnet, and her husband. The couple's belongings were stolen, and their dog was tragically found wandering alone in the streets. Thankfully, the dog escaped serious harm.
Oppenheim lamented the police's inability to respond promptly to the burglary, stating that officers informed them they wouldn't be available for several days due to high workload. He emphasized that this situation is a direct consequence of underfunding within the Los Angeles Police Department. Oppenheim pointed out that the department currently has 8,600 officers, the lowest number in 30 years, despite a surge in crime and robberies. He questioned how the city could justify allocating billions of dollars towards projects like the Merced to Bakersfield bullet train while neglecting the essential needs of public safety.He further expressed his concern about the increasing number of friends leaving Los Angeles due to the escalating crime rates and homelessness. Oppenheim believes that the city has the financial resources to address these issues but chooses to prioritize other projects, such as the preservation of smelt fish or the construction of the bullet train. He urged officials to reconsider their spending priorities and allocate more resources to public safety measures
