A Jersey Shore beach patrol team was training nearby and rushed to rescue the woman and her young children, according to authorities.
A mother was hospitalized in critical condition after she apparently became overpowered by the ocean current while trying to rescue her two young children from the water off Brigantine, authorities said.
Rescuers rushed to reports of a swimmer in distress around 9:30 a.m. Wednesday at the beach, according to police. Members of theEmergency responders performed life-saving measures on the woman, who was taken toThe woman’s two children were wading and swimming in the ocean when they appeared to be caught in the current, according to witness accounts to police. She rushed into the water to save her children, but soon disappeared underwater.
Police cited the “the mother’s selfless actions” along with help from witnesses and the beach patrol as leading to the children being saved. Authorities said more details were not being released. Lifeguards with the Brigantine Beach Patrol are on duty from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., the police department said. Officials encouraged beachgoers to swim at guarded beaches and between flags that mark swimming areas.
