The test sites place the vehicles on various road types and scenarios, including locations such as Hong Kong Science Park, the Productivity Council offices, imported labor dormitories in Tam Mi, and private housing estates. Lam mentioned that residents of Fairview Park in Yuen Long will have the chance to try autonomous minibuses this month as part of the government’s initiative to explore driverless technology applications.
“Earlier, the team and I from the Transport and Logistics Bureau were the first to take a ride on one of the 5G self-driving shuttle minibuses being tested in Fairview Park … I think the performance of automatic vehicles is quite good,” the officialare expected to be tested this year and next, including a trial of an autonomous system run by Hong Kong’s airport for transporting commuters to and from the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge.
Lam said that authorities have been actively collaborating with various organizations to promote the broader adoption of driverless technology. The public is expected to have more opportunities to ride autonomous vehicles. Earlier this year, the government introduced a new regulatory regime to permit broader and more flexible trials of autonomous vehicles on roads, aiming to increase public acceptance of driverless cars.
