An inquest has heard that Selesa Tafaifa, who died in a Townsville prison in November 2021, had endured a years-long struggle with mental illness
The court heard that Tafaifa had endured a years-long struggle with mental illness, including a form of bipolar disorder, had a substantial criminal history, and had often been aggressive with guards. She had also spent time in mental health units and had been homeless.She was on a range of mood stabilisers and antipsychotics at the time of her death, plus a range of other drugs to treat physical ailments.

And there’s less opportunities for sort of interpersonal conflicts. Reddan said she had no criticisms of the way the prison handled Tafaifa’s mental health condition, which she said was “reasonable”.
