The Australian selectors have decided to back experience with some shock selections in its 17-man squad for the World Test Championship final and the first two Tests of the Ashes. Find out who got in and all the notable omissions.
All-rounder Mitch Marsh’s Test career has been handed a lifeline while struggling opener Marcus Harris also received a recall to the squad despite both having lackluster tours of England in the past.
Pat Cummins captains the side after spending time away from the team follow the death of his mother and he is supported in the fast bowling ranks by Scott Boland, Josh Hazelwood and Mitchell Starc. Warner will be feeling the pressure as calls for him to be omitted from the squad grew louder after he was sent home from India after suffering a fractured arm and a concussion.
The selectors also surprised with Harris' inclusion who was unceremoniously dropped midway through the series in 2019 after averaging just under 10 from three matches. Notable omissions from the squad included batter Peter Handscomb who was one of the shining lights for Australia during the team’s recent tour of India.
Veteran Michael Neser has spent the last few years running drinks for the team as the 12th man but the selectors decided not to take him on the tour this time around.
