The legal battle between Sheel Seidler and her late husband's brothers escalates as SKMC seeks arbitration in Texas. Meanwhile, the Padres bolster their catching depth by signing veteran Martín Maldonado.

A legal dispute within the Seidler family escalated on Thursday with a motion filed in Texas. This motion, submitted on behalf of Seidler Kutsenda Management Company (SKMC), aims to have certain allegations raised in a lawsuit by Sheel Seidler, widow of the late Padres chairman Peter Seidler, decided by an arbitrator. The request stems from SKMC's prior petition to have those same claims arbitrated in California.

Notably, the Texas motion does not address the Padres nor the portions of Sheel Seidler's lawsuit concerning her attempt to remove Matt Seidler from his position as trustee of Peter Seidler's trusts. Sheel Seidler's lawsuit accuses Matt and Robert Seidler, trustees of her late husband's trusts, of breaching their fiduciary responsibilities to her as the beneficiary. She also seeks to nullify actions taken by the trust, including Matt Seidler's December 21 announcement of his brother, John Seidler, as the Padres' control person. Sheel Seidler argues in her complaint that she should be the team's control person. The brothers' response to other claims, including those related to the Padres' control person, is anticipated in the coming weeks. Thursday's motion effectively marks SKMC's intervention, petitioning the court to compel arbitration for portions of Sheel Seidler's lawsuit concerning transactions involving SKMC that she alleges constitute fraud. The motion states that Eric Kutsenda, a founding partner of SKMC alongside Peter and Robert Seidler, initiated arbitration for these claims on December 23, two weeks before Sheel Seidler filed her lawsuit. Kutsenda has served as the Padres' temporary control person since shortly after Peter Seidler's death in November 2023. John Seidler's appointment as the new control person is expected to be voted on by MLB's other 29 control persons within the next month. On a separate note, the Padres are adding veteran catcher Martín Maldonado to their spring training roster. The 38-year-old, with 14 MLB seasons under his belt, joins the team on a minor-league deal. Maldonado brings defensive expertise, ranking fourth in MLB with 59 defensive runs saved since 2012. The Padres' 40-man roster currently includes Luis Campusano and Brett Sullivan as catchers. Campusano started the 2024 season as the team's primary catcher but finished in Triple-A, while Sullivan spent most of the season there as well. The Padres' prospects will face off against the Oakland Athletics prospects on March 14 at the Peoria Sports Complex as part of the Spring Breakout series. This series features top prospects from all 30 teams playing one game each between March 13-16 in Arizona and Florida
