August sees the return to the northern hemisphere of properly dark night skies. With it getting darker earlier, stargazing gets easier. It’s great cosmic timing because along with convenience comes a conjunction of Mars and Jupiter, the peak of the annual Perseid meteor shower and much more.It’s on show every month, but how often do you stand watch watch the crescent moon as it hangs low in the west? It’s a fabulous sight in twilight the few nights after the new moon.
With the moon setting before midnight, conditions will be perfect, with the best views expected to be about 01:00 a.m. local time as the apparent source of the shower, the constellation Perseus, rises high into the sky. However, “shooting stars”—grains of dust that strike Earth’s atmosphere—result from matter left in the inner solar system by comet Swift-Tuttle.Look to the east early today, and you’ll see two planets so very close to each other.
