“I want people to know that Deavontia Wilkerson didn’t deserve to be shot and killed in his own home,” Helms said.“I just want people to remember my son as he was, as a good person,” Sanders said. “Everybody got wrongs and rights, but he didn’t deserve this.”“My brother picked up a stick and pulled the curtain back through the broken window and looked over there and he was laying in the hallway floor,” Sanders said.Since then, the house caught fire and was eventually demolished.
When deputies went to the crime back in 2021, they found Wilkerson dead on the floor, shot several times. “I take it personally. Any law enforcement officer in this county takes it personally, any law enforcement officer that came to that scene takes it personally. Everybody has the right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness,” Helms said.Newly released video could lead to answers in unsolved Geneva County murder.
