Sam Rockwell is used to playing a drunk, but that doesn't mean his performance of one is ever stale., Rockwell's Inspector Stoppard is tasked with unravelling the threads of an Agatha Christie like whodunnit – which happens to take place at an Agatha Christie play in the 1950s.spoke with Rockwell about how he manages to make falling look so effortless, what it was like building an on screen relationship with Saoirse Ronan, and the surprising depth of the movie.
Is it useful for you to think about all of the different layers a movie has when you're approaching your character or is it more useful to just focus on the role and the stuff that's on the page? I think it's mostly the role on the page, but anything that has to do with script analysis is useful. So knowing the script backwards and forwards. It has a lot of layers to it, which makes it very funny. It's just mainly playing the reality of imaginary circumstances.
There was one moment in particular when you're very drunk and you kind of slip and you do this very kind of like vaudevillian, physical comedy moment. Well, you know, I played drunks before and it's fun to play. You have to stay very relaxed. And so those falls come out of being really relaxed.
