Wisconsin’s Capitol building is one of the most open in the country, which made it easy for a man to walk in this week with a loaded handgun in search of the Democratic governor. The man was arrested for illegally openly carrying a weapon, then posted bail and returned outside the Capitol at night with an AK-style rifle. He was placed in protective custody. As of Friday no charges had been filed. The episode is putting a spotlight on security at the Wisconsin Capitol. The building has its own police force but isn't protected by metal detectors. Concealed weapons are allowed inside, but weapons cannot be openly carried.

The governor’s office is guarded by a Capitol police officer. That’s where the armed man headed Wednesday, demanding to see the governor to talk about “domestic abuse towards men,” according to police. Offices for members of the Wisconsin Supreme Court are also behind locked doors, but there is no police guard.Capitol police do have cameras throughout the building, and offices are equipped with a button that can be pushed to signal police in times of emergency.
Capitol Police instituted numerous changes following that report, including improving the emergency alarm system, and lawmakers in August ordered another review by the Legislative Audit Bureau that is slated to be done by the end of next year.

Department of Administration spokesperson Tatyana Warrick said Thursday that the man, who was shirtless and had a holstered handgun, approached the governor’s office on the first floor of the Capitol around 2 p.m. Wednesday. Warrick says after being arrested on a firearms violation, he returned to the outside of the Capitol around 9 p.m. with an assault rifle and was taken into custody. Evers' spokesperson declined to comment.
