Known for subsea expertise, Ocean Infinity has ventured into surface operations with its newly launched Needlefish.
Ocean Infinity, a company renowned for its expertise in subsea search and autonomous surveying, has ventured into a new domain with the unveiling of a high-speed autonomous patrol vessel. The company, which had been developing the project in secret, revealed the “Needlefish” at an event in Kuwait on Wednesday.
“Advanced technology and marine robotics company Ocean Infinity has successfully launched its innovative NeedleFish Uncrewed Surface Vessel at an official event with the Kuwaiti Coast Guard ,” said the company in a press release. As its inaugural client, the Kuwaiti Coast Guard has purchased two of the 46-foot vessels along with twin remote control stations. This acquisition is a critical upgrade for Kuwait’s national security, forming a key part of its new integrated maritime surveillance system designed to monitor 11,000 square kilometers of territorial waters. The vessels will be operated from new, purpose-built onshore Command Centers.Multifaceted maritime surveillance networkThe Needlefish is engineered not as a standalone system, but as an integral component of a multifaceted maritime surveillance network created by the leading marine electronics conglomerate, SRT Marine Systems. “Initiated to be a component of its new national integrated maritime surveillance system being delivered by SRT Marine Systems, the NeedleFish by Ocean Infinity is custom equipped with an array of specialist maritime surveillance sensor systems and leverages the company’s world-leading software, advanced robotics, and marine intelligence technology,” added Ocean Infinity. The boats are fully integrated within their new SRT C5iSR maritime surveillance system, providing a comprehensive security overview.“This programme is another significant milestone for Ocean Infinity as we employ our deep operational experience and proven technology to support clients in new and more complex markets at a time when these capabilities are more relevant than ever,” stated Oliver Plunkett, CEO of Ocean Infinity.Aptly named for its sleek appearance, the Needlefish is a catamaran jet boat capable of reaching 40 knots on the calm waters of the Arabian Gulf. It is custom-equipped with an array of specialist maritime surveillance sensors and is designed for a variety of missions, including unmanned patrol, surveillance, mapping, and surveying.Ocean Infinity’s experience in unmanned vehiclesThis project leverages Ocean Infinity’s extensive background in unmanned vehicle operations. The company has operated Unmanned Surface Vessels since 2019 and currently manages the largest active fleet of USVs and Uncrewed Underwater Vehicles in the world. “With deep operational experience from work in some of the most challenging maritime environments, Ocean Infinity’s technology enables the remote and autonomous operation of the largest fleet of USVs and Uncrewed Underwater Vehicles in active service today,” concluded the company. This deep operational experience in challenging maritime environments, combined with an expert understanding of data capture and transfer at sea, has culminated in this high-performance robotic platform. It is tailored specifically for the demanding conditions of Kuwait, enabling beyond-line-of-sight marine surveillance with live data streaming directly to the command centers.
