The US Secret Service is under fire following a second attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump in just over two months. A gunman was apprehended Sunday after allegedly attempting to shoot Trump at a golf course in Florida. The incident raises concerns about the agency's security protocols and its ability to protect high-profile individuals.

FILE - The Capitol is seen in Washington, Friday, Sept. 6, 2024, as Congress plans to return to work following a lengthy break.

An AK-style rifle with a scope was found in the bushes, raising questions about how the Secret Service has adapted its security strategy around the former president since the first attempt on his life on July 13. Trump's security detail has been significantly beefed up since July, yet the would-be gunman was still able to get within shooting distance of the former president before being detected by the sharp vision of agents posted up on the grounds of Trump's golf course.

Just two months ago, Trump survived an assassination attempt during a rally in Pennsylvania. A bullet in that incident, fired from an adjacent rooftop, struck Trump’s ear during his speech before Secret Service agents jumped in to protect the former president. Both the July incident and the one Sunday appear to involve issues securing a perimeter around Trump.
