The Secret Service is again facing questions about its ability to protect high-profile political figures after a second apparent attempt on Trump's life.
Secret Service was already in the spotlight after Trump was hit in the ear by a bullet while speaking at an outdoor rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, prompting outrage and questions about how a teenager armed with a rifle could get within 200 yards of Trump and fire shots without protection.
Two attempts on Trump’s life in a nine-week span has prompted scrutiny from Congress as to why the former president does not have a bigger security detail. That two people were able to get within shooting distance of Trump is certain to lead to high-profile hearings on Capitol Hill and has already prompted a legislative push from GOP lawmakers mandating that presidential candidates are given the same level of protections as a sitting president.
“The one thing I want to make more clear is service needs more help and I think Congress should respond to their needs,” Biden said. Palm Beach County Sheriff Ric Bradshaw said during a press conference Sunday that the roads surrounding the golf course would have been shut down entirely if Trump were the current president but that he is given a smaller detail because he is not.
According to court documents filed Monday, the suspect in Sunday’s incident camped outside the golf course with food and a rifle for nearly 12 hours before being confronted by Secret Service agents.
