One year after the attempted assassination of President Donald Trump in Butler, Pennsylvania.

HILLCREST HEIGHTS, MD - AUGUST 19: U.S. Secret Service police assist Washington DC Metro police, Prince George's County police and other officers with multiple federal agencies investigating a high speed chase that started in Washington, DC and ended at the South Point Apartments, turning into a foot chase before ending in the suspect being apprehended nearby, according to police, on August 19, 2025 in Hillcrest Heights, Maryland.

An increased presence of law enforcement has been seen throughout the nation's capital since U.S. President Donald Trump announced plans to deploy federal officers and the U.S. National Guard. At the same time, the demand for counter snipers at the Secret Service increased by 151% from 2020 to 2024. Scrutiny of the agency came after the Butler incidents and eventually led to the director of the agency to resign. "The United States Secret Service's Counter Sniper Team is staffed 73 percent below the level necessary to meet mission requirements," the inspector general's report says. "Failure to appropriately staff CS could limit the Secret Service's ability to properly protect our Nation's most senior leaders, risking injury or assassination, and subsequent national-level harm to the country's sense of safety and security." Counter snipers require a specific amount of training and it takes about three years to be trained as a uniformed officer. The report discovered that counter snipers who missed these mandatory trainings were on the scene at 11% of events in 2024. This includes former President Joe Biden's wake for Rep. Eddie Bernice Johnson, a campaign reception in New York and a speech in New Hampshire. The 2024 campaign was a busy season for the Secret Service, as they would use staff from different protectees to fill holes for events.requested by Sen. Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, the agency has improved communication with local law enforcement agencies, which was an issue during Trump's campaign event in Butler.
