We chat with SecretInvasion director AliSelim about the finale of the disneyplus show and how it sets up the MCU's future, as well as his collaboration with Olivia Colman and exploration of Nick Fury's softer side:

Summary SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT Secret Invasion explores Nick Fury's past and the ramifications of his actions throughout the MCU. After failing to find the Skrulls a new planet and disappearing after the Blip, Fury returns when a Skrull uprising begins to cause problems on Earth. Fury loses a number of allies as the Skrull scheme to annihilate the human race and take Earth as their own under the leadership of Gravik.

Ali Selim: Wow. I wish that Kingsley were here to participate in this conversation, but I'm sure his head is in Barbie right now. Kingsley and I had a lot of conversations about the similarities and the differences between terrorism and sociopathy. I don't want to make this too psychological or too political, but I think Gravik was driven by his deep sense of betrayal by his father figure, rather than his deep sense of longing to find a home for his people.

Ali Selim: Oh, I'm sorry to disappoint you, but by the time I come on board, those decisions have been made. I'm not entirely sure why they've been made, but my job is to make them emotionally truthful, and gut-wrenching in the moment. And I hope that I succeeded. The conversations with Kevin are really reduced to, "Kill Maria Hill and make sure you do a good job." So, I say, "Great." Ali Selim: Thanks.

Ali Selim: I think it's never been done in the MCU. I think that the interesting, conflicted, emotional, warm, inner life of Nick Fury is fascinating. It's more my storytelling background and my storytelling interest, as opposed to who can kick the shit out of somebody else. I really like those internal struggles. I think Sam and Charlayne [Woodard] have a history together.
