Anas Sarwar says the SNP's sense of entitlement was on full display last week when their government’s credit card spending was exposed
After 16 years in government, the SNP has grown increasingly arrogant and out of touch. Their sense of entitlement was on full display last week when their government’s credit card spending was exposed.
There were a number of eye-catching splurges on VIP treatments and luxury hotels – but there were also thousands of smaller charges betraying a routine disregard for public money. Humza Yousaf’s decision to call for a review was a welcome step – but I’m not sure he has faced up to the scale of the problem. Because this is not just about one set of procedures – it is about the corrosive culture right at the heart of his party and his government.
The only thing the SNP truly has zero tolerance for is internal dissent – but even their once-famous discipline machine is breaking down. Meanwhile, it is the public who pay the price for the failures of this tired, arrogant government. NHS waiting list have spiralled, real wages have plummeted, and the poverty-related attainment gap in our schools is stuck at shamefully high levels – but the SNP is completely missing in action.
