The US is experiencing a second wave of influenza, with cases surging nationwide. Doctors' offices and urgent care clinics are seeing a significant increase in flu patients, coinciding with complications from earlier infections. The CDC reports a concerning rise in flu-related deaths and hospitalizations. Experts warn that the flu season is far from over and predict a significant number of deaths.
A second wave of influenza is hitting doctors' offices and urgent care clinics nationwide, according to the latest national flu data. “ Season al influenza activity remains elevated and continues to increase across the country,” the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported Friday. The new cases are coinciding with patients who were sick with the flu several weeks ago, and are now experiencing common complications.
Last year was particularly brutal, with 207 pediatric deaths reported. Dr. Todd Rice, a professor of medicine in the division of allergy, pulmonary and critical care medicine at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, said the current surge in flu could mean a “double hit” on hospitalizations. “It’s going to overlap considerably with the increase in bacterial pneumonias that we see routinely after flu peaks.
