The University’s press release says that following the surgery, the transplanted heart performed very well and there were no signs of rejection, raising prospects for his recovery. Engaging in rigorous physical therapy, Faucette dedicated himself to the arduous task of regaining his ability to walk. Xenotransplantation provides an alternative. Revivicor, a biotechnology company, provided a special pig to a lab at the University of Maryland School of Medicine. This pig had been genetically modified for use in research on xenotransplantation. Pigs were used because they are somewhat similar to humans in terms of their physiology.
