The National Weather Service issued a flood warning Monday morning, saying that water gauges indicate the Suicide Basin had started to release into Mendenhall Lake.
HESCO flood barriers separate a residential area from the Mendenhall River on August 3, 2025. The barriers were installed to protect property against glacial outburst flooding. The glacial flooding happens annually when melted ice and rain collect in the Kʼóox Ḵaadí Basin, also called Suicide Basin, unleashing floodwaters when ice dams collapse.
In August,The Mendenhall River is currently expected to crest at 11 to 12 feet on Tuesday between 8 a.m.-noon, according to the weather service, but the timing could change, meteorologist Nicole Ferrin from the National Weather Service said at a Juneau briefing Monday. This time, the impacts of the flood are expected to be less destructive. Some flooding is expected on the Mendenhall Lake and river near the glacier visitor center, campground, Skater’s Cabin Road, View Drive and “possibly below Back Loop Bridge,” according to the National Weather Service warning. The city and borough said in an email personnel are sending sand bags to View Drive, a residential street near the Mendenhall River, where “evacuation is advised.”Officials told people to stay away from the swollen river and lake and to abide by road and trail closures, including the closure of the Mendenhall River Trail. Overall, the flood is not expected to have the same impact as the August release, said Ferrin. The dynamics differ in that the basin was full then, and it has not nearly refilled. “We do not believe that there is the same risk to life and safety,” as from the huge August outburst flood, said Ryan O’Shaughnessy, the emergency programs manager for the City and Borough of Juneau. A secondary, late-season outburst flood isn’t totally unexpected, Ferrin said. Scientists have been watching Suicide Basin refill since August. In addition to the glacial outburst flood, heavy rains are also expected in Juneau in coming days.Michelle Theriault Boots is a longtime reporter for the Anchorage Daily News.
