“My favorite part is like getting the actual money and like the worst part probably actually shoveling. Like, the first couple minutes,” Crim said. “I know it’s all worth it at the end.” The eighth-grader has been shoveling driveways on snow days to save up for new basketball shoes and an upcoming tournament trip to California in April with his team.“If it’s too heavy or like too uncomfortable ... I like having like light and comfortable ones,” he said. “I like the shoes I have right now, but it’d probably be good to have new ones.” Crim said he has completed nearly 10 driveways so far, taking about 20 to 30 minutes each. He’s aiming to raise around $300 for his trip.“He sees HOA go out in the neighborhood. He’s like, ‘You know what? I could do that,’” Jessica said, adding that Crim has been on the same basketball team since second grade. While Crim was out earning money, his nine-year-old brother Thomas had different plans for the snow day. “I feel amazing. I have enough time to play my game and stuff,” Thomas said, referring to his favorite VR and PlayStation games. For Jessica, a mother of four who moved her family from the Yukon-Kuskokwim region to Anchorage five years ago, snow days present unique challenges. “It’s kind of an inconvenience,” Jessica said. “I think they could make it, but, you know, they go to school right down the road and it’s something you have to deal with in Alaska. “When we’re in the village, you just got to make do and go. But in the city, they’re not used to — we get to stay home."At Service High School’s sledding hill, stay-at-home dad Michael Duncan brought his two youngest children to burn off energy while his wife worked from home. “These are the two youngest, and they have a lot of energy, a lot more than the oldest,” Duncan said.“I’m sledding the whole time,” Koda declared.“I’m gonna go lay on my stomach and I’m gonna pull back my hands!” Koda exclaimed, describing his sledding technique. Michael acknowledged that while snow days don’t impact his family significantly, they can be challenging for working parents. “For people who like work from home, it can it pretty impactful. I’m pretty sure if you also don’t work at home, that’s even bigger of an impact because now you got to leave work,” Michael said. “But it’s really the end of the day, it’s for safety.” Thursday was the second school cancellation for Anchorage in January, with the district continuing to monitor conditions and make decisions based on student safety.“It’s all worth it at the end,” he said. Why are more drivers getting DUIs?
