A man is dead and another is under arrest after a deadly weekend home invasion in Alexander City, the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency confirmed Sunday.

) - Police have arrested and charged a second person in connection to a weekend home invasion that left an Alex City man dead. Steven Abercrombie, 22 of Alex City , and Joshua Etchison, also of Alex City , are charged with theft of property, burglary and capital murder following the death of 32-year-old Tovias Gopher.

Special agents with ALEA’s State Bureau of Investigation opened a homicide investigation at the request of the Alex City Police Department. According to ALEA, agents responded around 11:15 a.m. Saturday to the 4000 Block of Washington Street in Alexander City. That’s where first responders found Gopher suffering from a life-threatening gunshot wound. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Steven Abercrombie and Joshua Etchison are now both charged with capital murder for the deadly home invasion robbery of Alex City resident Tovias Gopher.According to court documents, the two men stole 4 guns from someone earlier that day including an AR style rifle, 2 shot guns and a BB gun. Both men are now being held at the Tallapoosa County Jail. Details on why Alex City Police were not investigating the case were provided in a social media post from District Attorney Mike Segrest. The DA said he “contacted the Attorney General’s office asking the AG to take over the investigation and prosecution of the case because of an internal conflict of interest of an employee in the District Attorney’s office.” Segrest did not provide any other details and said his office had been “fire-walled from this investigation from the very beginning and does not have any information related to the investigation.”Minor charged in July Montgomery homicide
