Trump was criticized for taking a seemingly soft approach toward Putin during the call, but Secretary of State Mike Pompeo spoke in glowing terms about the president's handling of Russia.

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo made numerous television appearances Sunday morning, where he was called up to repeatedly explain why President Donald Trump did not use his recent phone call with Russian President Vladimir Putin to warn Russia against interfering in the 2020 election.

“We have worked diligently to protect America’s election system, something I wish the previous administration had done more effectively,” he said. “We had pretty good success in 2018, and the Department of Homeland Security has talked about that, and we continue to be very focused.” “This administration has been tougher on Russia than any previous administrations,” he said, adding that the show wasn’t long enough for him to rattle off election safety efforts. “…We continue to work on it, we continue to make sure that every election is as safe as it could possibly be.”

On Twitter and in rallies, he called Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s concluded investigation into election meddling a “hoax.” He has likewise appeared unwilling to admit that his campaign may have been boosted by Russian efforts, calling those claims a “witch hunt” and “fake news.” Despite the president's waffling on the subject, Mueller's report about the evidence of interference was unequivocal.
