The SEC welcomes new members Texas and Oklahoma this year.

South Eastern Conference Commissioner Greg Sankey fields a question from a media member following his comments on the current state and future of the SEC. The first day of SEC Media Days was held at the Omni Dallas Hotel in Dallas on July 15, 2024.

The presence of the two rival programs will extend the SEC’s membership to 16 schools, four of which joined the conference in the last 15 years.on Monday at the Omni Hotel in Dallas, Sankey said he isn’t thinking about prospective members, despite rumors of Clemson and Florida State’s interest in leaving the Atlantic Coast Conference.“We’re focused on our 16,” Sankey said. “I’m not a recruiter. My job is to make sure we meet the standard of excellence that we have for ourselves on a daily basis.

USC, UCLA and Washington will make their Big Ten debuts this season after leaving the now-decimated Pac-12 to compete in a predominantly Midwestern conference. Fellow Pac-12 alumni Stanford and Cal are joining the ACC, where they will play schools mostly based on the opposite coast. Sankey didn’t entertain questions about whether the SEC would branch out of the southeastern United States and areas adjacent to it.“We’re focused on our 16, period,” Sankey said. “You’ve seen how we’ve made decisions over the last decade-plus for the contiguous states to join. I think that’s incredibly wise and provides remarkable strength. I’m not going to guess about what happens next.
