Next week the SEC and Big Ten commissioners and athletic directors will meet in Nashville for the first time ever to discuss the future of college football.

Clockwise from upper left: Rob Stone, Urban Meyer , Greg Sankey and Mark Ingram II appear on "The Triple Option" on Tuesday, October 1st, 2024.“If we can set a direction that we can agree on, others will have the opportunity to participate and follow,” said SEC Commissioner." He emphasized the significance of this historic meeting between two conferences that occupy nine of the top ten spots in the latest AP poll.,” Sankey added.

Over the past decade, the NCAA has lost much of its authority amid lawsuits regarding student-athlete eligibility, and it seems the two largest conferences are looking to fill the void. "It starts with, can the two conferences come together around some common thoughts?" Sankey said. Sankey has already taken steps to set his conference apart from the NCAA by eliminating the spring transfer portal window for players looking to transfer to from one SEC school to another in an attempt to set rosters and provide some stability for their student athletes. While the hands of the NCAA are somewhat tied until a settlement currently in the courts around compensation for players is settled, Sankey believes there is still room to go forward.
