Named for the emperor penguin, the new coaster reaches speeds greater than 60 mph along the nearly 2,500-foot track

SeaWorld San Diego officially opened its long-awaited Emperor roller coaster to the public Saturday following a 10-day preview period for park pass members.

Set to open in 2020 but delayed by the pandemic, Emperor is an $11-million dive coaster with floorless ride cars that hold 18 riders in three, six-person rows. The ride features a barrel roll, inversions, Immelmann loop , hammerhead turn and flat spins.and Gloria during an opening-day ceremony as an important moment for the city of San Diego and a theme park company on the rebound.

Riders experience the dive on the opening of the Emperor roller coaster at SeaWorld San Diego Saturday. The ride is the tallest, fastest and longest dive coaster in California, as well as the only floorless dive coaster in the state. Lake also touted the marine park, which first opened in 1964, as the only place in North America where people can see emperor penguins.
