Amazon declined to give any specific reasons behind the move. The spokesperson said they are always evaluating their office footprint based on the needs of their businesses., said Amazon employees who used to come into his restaurant told him the company wanted to stop paying rent when they have vacant space in other buildings they already own.
The sizzle and savory aromas that greet customers at Market House Meats frequently had people lined up out the door. Mattas said that foot traffic took a turn when Amazon left the neighborhood. Amazon is phasing out remote work and by January its employees will have to come to the office five days a week. The small businesses in and around the neighborhood along Howell Street won’t see any benefits from that transition and a few are worried about keeping afloat.
