A historic partnership between the city of Seattle, Seattle Public Schools, and private donors has secured $30 million in funding for the construction of a new Memorial Stadium. A groundbreaking partnership has emerged to fund the construction of a new Memorial Stadium in Seattle , marking a potential turning point for the beloved venue. The One Roof Stadium Partnership, a consortium comprising the Seattle Kraken, Climate Pledge Arena, and the One Roof Foundation, announced that $30 million in private donations has been secured for the project, ensuring its successful completion.
Prominent figures and organizations have contributed significantly to this fundraising effort. WaFd Bank kicked off the donations with a $2 million pledge, which was matched by Amazon, the final contributor to this milestone. Other notable philanthropists and influential families have also stepped forward with generous contributions. The Brotmans, known for their ties to Costco, donated $2.5 million, while Glen and Alison Milliman, Mary Pigott, the Walker Family Fund, and the Razore Family Foundation each contributed $1 million. David Horita, the executive director of the One Roof Foundation and senior vice president of the Kraken, has been instrumental in spearheading this fundraising initiative. He emphasized the stadium's historical significance, stating that it has served as a beacon for the city for 77 years, but its age has made it increasingly difficult to maintain and operate effectively.The new stadium will boast a capacity of up to 8,000 people and will prioritize the needs of Seattle Public Schools (SPS), retaining its primary use for school events, graduations, and sporting activities. Under the terms of the agreement, SPS will retain ownership of the facility, while the One Roof Partnership will play a key role in its operation and activation, ensuring seamless integration with the rest of the Seattle Center campus. The stadium's design will incorporate modern amenities and enhance accessibility, while preserving its historical character. The exterior will be completely revamped, featuring an airy, open-air entrance and exit, replacing the existing vintage barbed wire and creating a more welcoming atmosphere. The west side will also be redesigned, connecting the stadium to iconic landmarks such as the International Fountain, McCaw Hall, and the Armory. This collaborative effort has garnered widespread support, with Seattle Mayor Bruce Harrell and SPS Superintendent Dr. Brent Jones both expressing their enthusiasm for the project's transformative potential.
