Seattle Seahawks training camp is underway! This week marks the start of padded practices, which means we should see more physical play as we near closer to the preseason opener. For the rest of this week, we will have key questions across every defensive position. This article will focus on the defensive line. Seattle, to put it bluntly, has gotten its ass kicked in the trenches on both sides of the ball over the past several seasons.
Seattle was bang-average in yards before contact but reamed with a league-worst 2.6 yards after contact. Their avoided tackle rate was 20% , which indicates a three-level problem but it starts with the defensive line. Run defense doesn’t need to break the bank; Johnathan Hankins is a cheap run-stuffing nose tackle added to the rotation, and hopefully we see Mike Morris and/or Cameron Young contribute to some degree. It has to at least be cohesive, gap sound, and disciplined.
